In the field of Cleanroom environmental control, AHU (Air Handing Unit) and HVAC system are two concepts that are often mentioned but easily confused.

What is an HVAC system?

The complete system combination of heating ventilation and air conditioning operates under the HVAC acronym (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning). Multiple components functioning as a whole create this detailed environmental control system for Cleanroom needs.

The core functions of an HVAC system include:

  • Temperature regulation

  • Humidity control

  • Air filtration

  • Airflow organization

  • Pressure control

What is an AHU (Air Handling Unit)?

Air Handler Unit

The AHU Unit is a key component of an HVAC system that specializes in the handling and delivery of air. There may be a misconception that an AHU is the same as an entire HVAC system, when in fact an AHU is only an important subsystem of the latter.

A typical Air Handing Unit contains the following components:

  • Fans (provide air flow power)

  • Filter (cleans the air)

  • Heat exchanger (regulates air temperature)

  • Humidifying/dehumidifying unit

  • Muffler

Key Differences

  • Relationship between system and component: The HVAC system acts as the complete entity although the Air Handling Unit operates as a specific individual component.

  • Scope of Function: The HVAC regulates various building environmental factors including heating venting air conditioning and ventilation as it's full system responsibility yet the Air Handling Unit specifically manages air distribution.

  • Control Complexity: The HVAC system needs to coordinate the work of multiple subsystems, while the AHU Unit's control is relatively independent.

In Cleanroom Design, both the overall performance of the HVAC system and the specific selection of the AHU need to be considered, and that the two should work together in order to achieve optimal control of the cleanroom environment.

Conclusion

Cleanroom Design and maintenance depend on understanding the fundamental differences between the AHU and HVAC systems.  Because the Air Handing Unit serves as HVAC system’s air purifying and transporting component known as “lungs” while HVAC delivers full environmental control. Precise collaboration between these systems enables an environment to reach its strict environmental standards.
